Each studio involved in digital sound processing is converting sampling rate or requantizing audio files constantly. This conversion is required by customers or equipment itself, or occurs implicitly inside digital devices and algorithms used in the studio. Such operations result in more or less painful degradation of the original sound quality, what makes part of the sound engineer, and the artists themselves work somehow wasted. This does not need to happen. Nykiel-Audio offers an unique tool to solve this problem.

Use cases

iSRC is a synchronous sample rate converter and requantizer designed for audio files (iSRC stands for integer sample rate converter). It is used to convert various sample rates and bit resolutions without subjective quality loss. The most common applications which typically lead to significant sound quality degradation are:

  • converting dense files to consumer formats (with or without sample rate conversion), i.e. 44.1/24, 96/24, etc to Audio CD format (44.1/16)
  • converting digital audio files from various sources, recorded at different frequencies and densities to a common format,
  • converting floating-point formats (32b/64b) to integer formats. Most programs use floating point samples internally, while DA converters use integer formats. Conversion is made in automatic and implicit way. ISRC allows to control this process, what significantly makes the sound quality better.
  • removing quantization errors coming from previous processing stages, what is done by converting to the same frequency and the same bit depth.
  • increasing the sampling rate before non-linear operations such as compression / limitation or equalization, which always sound better at higher sampling rates.

How to test converters?

Experience shows that the same AD/DA converters sound different at different sample rates and different numbers of bits – is it better or worse depends on the characteristics of the converter. In order to subjectively verify sample rate converter make the following test: convert the selected files to the desired frequency and then back to the original one. Then compare the original file and the one which was converted twice. This is to eliminate the impact introduced by DA converters themselves.
